Smoking Significantly Increases Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

by Admin on February 2, 2010

Smoking is a significant risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease according to a report published by University of California – San Francisco.  These findings contradict other tobacco industry sponsored studies that indicate that smoking protects against the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers developed a study examining previously published articles examining things such as quality of journal, time of publication and tobacco industry affiliation of the authors.  The research team at UCF examined 43 published studies from 1984 to 2007.

Study authors with tobacco industry affiliation indicated that smoking provided protection against Alzheimer’s disease.  Yet in studies without tobacco industry affiliation, smoking was shown to pose a significant risk to developing Alzheimer’s disease.  In fact, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease nearly doubled.

In studies where authors had an industry affiliation, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s was not significant.  In fact, these studies indicated smoking protected against the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

When examining all studies, the risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease cause by smoking was shown to be statistically insignificant.

Have you heard about a program titled “Spark” in Wisconsin. It’s designed specifically for individuals with memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease.

In a casual gathering, participants and their loved ones will look at different pieces of art.

The experience is meant to evoke conversation and pleasant memories.

“And it’s really not about curing or finding a way to fix the memory loss, it’s a way to spark conversation and have a moment,” says Jayna Hintz, Curator of Education.

The museum is already working with three area long-term care facilities.

On a personal note, I am interested in exchanging links with you from my medical blog (medicalnoise.wordpress.com) over to your medical. Let me know how you want to be linked and I can get you listed in a few days.

On a business note, I know the owner over at JRS Medical and was wondering if they could get listed in this blog under a category like Medical Resources or something like that for a fee? I’m sure they would be open to a blog post reviewing their website or some of their products too? They can pay you by PayPal for your trouble.

Let me know if you’re interested in either. Look forward to hearing back from you.
